INTRODUCTION
The Very Large Box
When the author of this tome, Jim Sorenson, first contacted me about this project, he asked me if I happened to have any old Transformers model sheets he could use. I think he was hoping that, at best, maybe I had one or two ragged pages stuck under a pile of forgotten comics that he might be able to tape back together. Then I tod him about the very large box full of paper in my basement. For some reason, I held onto all the model sheets and other reference materials Hasbro had sent me during my tenure as editor and writer of the Transformers comic books that Marvel published in the 1980s. I added my own contributions to the Transformers canon--plots, scripts, story treatments and more. By the time I left the Transformers in 1989, literally hundreds of pages of material documenting the evolution of the Transformers over the first five years of their existence filled this very large box to the brim. If I had stayed on any longer, I would have had to get a second very large box.
I don't think Jim appreciated the quantity of materials I kept until he came over to my house last November to see the very large box for himself. It was like he got sucked into a black hole. He couldn't pull himself away from the contents of the very large box. He was overwhelmed.
But that's because it hit him all at once. My experience was different. Looking at the stacks of model sheets that we dug out of that very large box reminded me that the Transformers began with only 20 or so characters. I was asked to name these characters, develop their personalities, build a mythology around them. What a wonderful creative opportunity... to attend the big bang of a whole new universe! And then, over the next few years, as the Transformers' success grew, Hasbro rolled out more lines of toys, Hasbro sent me more model sheets, and based on those sheets, I named and developed more characters and dreamed up more storylines.
And so, the very large box filled up. Each new stack of paper that I put in it was a testament to the Transformers' enduring popularity. And now, finally, I know why I kept that very large box--so Jim, who, with some difficulty, eventually did pull himself away from the contents of the very large box, could use many of those model sheets within it for this book--a resource guide to the Transformers unlike any other.
I hope that, after perusing the pages that follow, you will agree with me that it was a good idea for me to keep that very large box full of paper all these years.
